test on coastal landforms Flashcards
How are materials moved?
materials along coasts are primarily moved through processes like erosion, where waves wear away rocks, and transportation, which includes methods like traction, saltation, and suspension. Ultimately, these materials can be deposited in different areas, forming features like beaches and spits.
Erosional landforms
Erosional landforms are created when waves and currents erode the coastline. Processes like hydraulic action, abrasion, and attrition break down rocks and sediments. Over time, features such as cliffs, wave-cut platforms, and sea stacks are formed as softer materials are removed, revealing harder rock structures.
Depositional landforms
Depositional landforms are produced on coastlines where mud, sand and shingle accumulate faster than they can be moved away by the waves. This usually happens along stretches of coastline dominated by constructive waves.
1 factor which affects the coastline
human activity
Settlement - coastal lowlands have attracted people and their settlements worldwide throughout history. Many of the world’s most densely populated areas are located on the coast.
Coastal management- for many centuries, people have tried to control the coastline. For example, building sea walls and groynes helps to protect stretches of coastline from high rates erosion or deposition.
2 factor which affects the coastline
geology
If it is concordant or discordant as one is most likely to form cliffs and the other will form bays and headlands.
by the type of rock; if it is hard or soft
3 factor which affects the coastline
vegetation
4 factor which affects the coastline
rising sea levels
due to global warming and climate change, low-lying coasts will be drowned by rising sea levels.
many of the worlds most densely populated areas are located on coastal lowlands.
