What is mood?
Feeling or atmosphere the author creates for readers.
What is setting?

What are 3 elements that affect mood?
Description of setting:the writers choice of setting and the words used to describe the setting.
Imagery: language used to appeal to the reader’s senses.
Character’s speech and feelings.
What is author’s viewpoint?
The unique combination of ideas, values, feelings, and beliefs that influence the way the writer look at a topic.
What is style?
A manner of writing. It involves how something is said rather than what is said.
What are 3 elements of style?
Word choice and imagery: use of specific words.
Syntax: refers to the way words put together are used to form phrases and sentences.
Figurative language: language used in imaginatively ways.
What is foreshadowing?
When the author gives hints to what will happen in the future.
What is suspense?
The growing of tension, fear, and excitement felt by the reader.
What are 3 techniques to create suspense?
Describing a character’s anxiety or fear.
Using vivid words to describe dramatic sights, sounds, or feelings.
Repeating words, phrases, or character’s actions.
What is superstition?
Believing in omens of good or bad luck.
What is theme?
The message about life the author is trying to share. Sometimes it is revealed and sometimes you have to infer.
