Test for sugars Flashcards
Test for reducing sugars
Benedicta reagent
What sugars are reducing sugars
All monosaccharides and maltose and lactose
What colour is benedict’s solution and why is it that colour
Blue
Because its copper sulphate
What is benedict’s solution reduce to
Copper sulphate to Copper oxide
Steps for benedict’s reagent test
Add benedict’s solution
Bring it to a boil
Why are the results different colours
The higher the concentration of sugar the darker the colour
How do you test for non reducing sugars
get the solution containing the sugar and add dilute hydrochloric acid to it
Boil the solution
add sodium hydrogen carbonate to neutralise it
Test using universal indicator to see if its neutralised
Add an alkaline to it
then carry out benedict test on it
Why do you add an alkaline when testing for non reducing sugars
Make the solution more alkaline because benedict’s solution works better in alkaline solutions
