Test Ecology Flashcards
Biosphere
A spot around earth where organisms can live.
Ecosystem
All the living organisms and their physical and chemical environment.
Abiotic
Non-living
Biotic
Living
Water cycle
Evaporation, condensation, parcipatation, moves across surface, transpiration… Repeat.
Carbon cycle
Carbon in various forms and cycled through the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. The two main human activity contributing are deforestation and burning fossil fuels.
Nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen gas is in the atmosphere. It’s converted by nitrogen fixing bacteria into nitrogen-containing compounds. Nitrogen in the soil can be absorbed by plants and passed from producers to consumers.
Photosynthesis
The form of sun being converted into chemical energy (sugar).
WORD EQUATION.
light energy Carbon dioxide +water ------> sugar + oxygen
Cellular respiration
The process in which sugar and oxygen are converted into Carbon dioxide and water releasing energy for the cell. This proses doesn’t involve sunlight.
WORD EQUATION
sugar + oxygen —>Carbon dioxide+water+energy
Food chains
A sequence of organisms each feeding on the next showing HOW ENERGY IS TRANSFERRED.
Grass—> bunny—>fox—>wolf
Food web
A chart representing the feeding relationship within a community.
Pyramid of energy
Illustrates energy loss and transfer between tropic levels. (Remove a zero each level) 1-producers 2-primary consumer 3-secondary consumer 4-tertiary consumer
Competition
Two individuals go for the same resource.
Example: Fox and coyote both feet on common prey such as mice and rabbits.
Predation
One individual feeds on another.
Example: lynx pray on snowshoe hare.
Mutualism
Two individuals benefiting each other.
Example: nitrogen fixing Bactria live in the roots in certain plants.
