Situation: She confronts Abigail after Abigail told the girls she told Reverend Parris everything that happened in the woods.
Significance: This is our first sign that Abigail wants Elizabeth Proctor dead.
“But I will cut off my hand before I ever reach for you again”
Speaker: John Proctor
Situation: He tells Abigail that their affair is over with and to forget it happened.
Significance: This shows how serious he is about the situation.
“There is a prodigious danger in the seeking out of loose spirits”
Speaker: Rebecca Nurse
Situation: They are talking about the children and how they have come after loose spirits
Significance: They should’ve listened to her, but don’t and it turns out she’s right
“You think that is God’s work that you should never lose a child and I bury all but one?”
Speaker: Goody Putnum
Situation: She is talking about how she has lost all of her children but one while others are “complaining” about losing one of theirs
Significance: She admits to wanting Tituba to conjure the dead babies; she later accuses Rebecca of murdering them
“I mean to crush [the devil] utterly if he has shown his face”
Speaker: Rev hale
Situation: he is talking about crushing the devil after mrs putnam talks about her 7 children who have passed away
Significance: he is new to town but already has a lot of passion in this
“Adultery, John”
Speaker: Goody Proctor
Situation: John is supposed to name all 10 of the commandments to prove he is a good christian man but he has forgoten one of them and his wife steps in to help
Significance: this is something that he has already committed with abigail so it is a big deal when that is the specific one that he forgets
“Herrick, Herrick, it is a needle!”
Speaker: Cheever
Situation: there is a doll with a needle
Significance: but Mary made it not Elizabeth, despite Elizabeth being accused of voodoo
“Do that which is good and no harm will come to thee”
Speaker: john proctor
Situation: he is talking to mary warren about angel raphael and tobias while comforting her
Significance: he is giving her advice and saying no harm will come to her and in the end it does
“My niece, sir, my niece—I believe she has vanished”
Speaker: Rev. Parris
Situation: Abigal has run away because she is scared she is going to get caught after lying to the whole town
Significance: This is when they realized they may have messed up, she took all of her uncles money so now he is left with nothing
“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!”
Speaker: John Proctor
Situation: He is about to het hanged for witchcraft and they are trying to convince him to confess but he won’t
Significance: He is very passionate about this and has felt so guilty about the whole situation
