- How does the mouth aid in digestion?
A
Mechanical digestion - teeth (incisors) cut and tear (canine) food into smaller pieces. They (molars)balls crush and grind food. Chemical digestion - saliva moistens food, making it easier to swallow. saliva contains and enzyme salivary amylase that chemically breaks down starch into smaller sugar molecules called maltose. the tongue mixes and positions the food for swallowing. nb pg.75
