Test/Diagnosis Flashcards
Myasthenia gravis
Endrophonium and acetylcholine receptor antibody test (gold standard)
Endrophonium - aka Tensilon test. During the test, a small amount of the drug edrophonium chloride is injected intravenously. Edrophonium temporarily blocks the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. By blocking acetylcholinesterase, more acetylcholine is available at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily improving muscle function in individuals with MG. Cause MG causes muscle weakness and fatigue.
