What happened in McCulloch V. Maryland?
It was a landmark case. It made a federal bank constitutional. Federal government over state government. Government can do what is necessary and proper out of its power.
What happened in Gibbons V. Ogden?
Established law controlled interstate commerce. States do not have controlled of interstate commerce and trade.
What was the Monroe Doctrine?
Stopped Europe to gain any power in the region.
What was life like in the north?
Police and firemen were made. Lacked sanitation caused illness and desease. Agriculture is the main economy system. Farms supported the growth of cities.
What was life like in the south?
There was a clear class system. Planter elite dominated the economy and political systems. Yeomen farmers were the bulk of the souths white population. Slave= 37% of the souths population.
What was the land of cotton?
Cotten gin was used for combing the seeds out of the cotton. The south tripled in value.
What was slavery?
They worked in the fields, some preform skilled labor, and some worked as domestic servants. They could not own land, leave without permission, file a lawsuit, posses fire arms (in some states), testify in court against a white, learn to read or write in some states. Gangs worked in fields. Some woman worked in fields others care for children. Children were children until useful.
Were there free African Americans?
Yes, New Orleans was different. They were never accepted into society however.
How did enslaved people pass the time?
They sung songs and made their own culture.
What were terrifs?
Revenue terifts- provide income for federal government.
Protective tarrifs- protected US manufacturers
Who was educated?
Upper and middle class white men where sometimes educated. Woman educated in domestic arts. Slaves were not aloud to learn.
What was the Mexican American war?
1848- treaty of Guadalupe- hildago. End of Mexican war. US gained Texas, New Mexico, and upper California.
What is the Missouri Comprimise?
Missouri= slave state Maine= free state 36 30 N latitude established free and enslaved states.
