Test Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction
A chemical reaction is when two elements fuse or join together to make a compound
Rate of reaction
How fast the reactants turn into the products
Catalysts
Chemicals which speed up the rate of a reaction but they do not get used up in the reaction themselves
Concentration
The higher the the concentration the more particles there are to collide so the rate of reaction will increase
Surface area
The larger the surface area the faster the rate of reaction because more particles are exposed for successful collisions
Temperature
The higher the temperature the more energy the particles have which means more successful collisions because the particles are moving quicker
Exothermic
Energy is transferred to the surroundings
Endothermic
Energy is transferred from the surroundings
Solid
High density
Cannot be compressed
Fixed shape and volume
Can’t flow
Liquid
Fairly high density
Cannot be compressed
Takes the shape of the container
Can flow
Gas
Low density
Can be compressed
No fixed shape or volume
Can flow
Oxidation reaction
Where oxygen is added
Acids and neutralisation
A group of soluble chemicals
Acid + alkali = salt + water
Overall neutralisation equation—
H+ + OH —-> H2O+ salt
Independent variable
Variable we change
Dependant variable
What we are testing for
