What was the central issue that brought the Dread Scott v Sanford to the Supreme Court
Dread Scott had lived in Missouri, then he had moved to Wisconsin, where slavery was not allowed, with his owner. When he returned to Missouri his owner died. The owners wife took ownership of Scott. Eventually those rights transferred to her brother. Antislavery lawyers helped Scott file a lawsuit. In time the case reached Supreme Court. The court ruled that Scott couldn’t file the lawsuit because he was an enslaved person, not a citizen. The courts written decision clearly stated that slaves were considered to be property. The courts ruling continued by making the Missouri compromise unconstitutional, meaning slavery was allowed everywhere. Do to this the white southerners rejoiced. African Americans responded angrily to the Dread Scott decision.
