Shambles
If something is a shambles it is very disorganized and lots of confusion. (The economy is in a complete shambles.)
mob
if a famous person gets mobbed people rush to get close to them a form a crowd of people. (Fans ran onto the pitch and mobbed Ryan Giggs.)
Dogged
dogged behavior shows your determination to continue doing something. (Sir Alex highlighted his side’s dogged commitment as a defining factor in a Win at Fulham.)
smashing
very good, brilliant (Sir Alex said after the win against Fulham as a smashing result.)
How long is a strand of DNA?
DNA is uncountable but because it’s long and has thin shape you can count it by talking about individual strands.
what (something) (looks/sounds/etc.) like
talk about the way something looks with the phrase “what …….. looks like”, this phrase acts as a noun. (What it smells like is not as important as what it tastes like.)
(someone) used to be able to (do something)
when talking about an ability that someone has in the past use the phrase “…… used to be able to ……” (Didn’t you use to be able to do a back handspring?)
I could see them, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying.
In native-sounding English, it’s much more common to use “ used to be able to” than “could”. We use “could” mostly to talk about something that a person was able to do one time in the past.
