Why was WHMIS created?
It was created in the response to the Canadian workers rights to know about the safety and health hazards that may be associated with the materials or chemicals they use at work.
Why is exposure a concern?
- can cause or contribute to many serious health effects
- can cause fires or explosions
- WHMIS was created to help stop injuries, illnesses, deaths, medical costs, and fires caused by hazardous materials
What are controlled products?
- the name given to products, materials, or substances that are regulated by WHMIS legislation
- all controlled products fall into one or more of six categories
What is Class A?
Compressed gas
What is Class B?
Flammable and combustible materials
What is Class C?
Oxidizing material
What is Class D?
Poisonous and infectious materials
What is Division D1?
Materials causing immediate and serious toxic effects
What is division D2?
Materials causing other toxic effects
What is Division D3?
Bio hazardous infectious material

Corrosive material
