Test Flashcards
The purpose of inflammation
Limit the local drainage
Remove injured cells and debris
Prepare wound for healing
5 signs and symptoms associated with inflammatory response
Swelling, redness, warmth, pain, and decreased function
Phagocytosis
A process by which these cells consume pathogens, coagulated blood and cellular debris.
What cleans the injured area and prepares the site for wound healing
Neutrophils and monocytes
Integrity of the skin is restored by
Resolution- a process by which damaged cells recover and reestablish their normal function
Regeneration- cell duplication
Scar formation- replacement of damaged cells with fibrous scar tissue
First intention healing
When wound edges are directly next to each other
Second intention healing
The wound edges are widely separated leading to a more time consuming and complex reparative process
Third intention healing
When the wound edges are intentionally left widely separated and are later brought together with some sort of closure material
Incision
A clean separation of skin and tissue with smooth even edges
Laceration
A separation of skin and tissue in which the edges are torn and irregular
Abrasion
A wound in which the surface layers of skin are scraped away
Ulceration
A shallow crater in which the skin or mucus membrane is missing
Puncture
An opening of skin underlying tissue or mucus membrane caused by a narrow sharp or pointed object
Avulsion
Stripping away of large areas of skin and underlying tissue leaving cartilage and bone exposed
Purposes of using a dressing
Keep wound clean Absorb drainage Controlling bleeding Protecting the wound from further injury Holding medication in place Maintaining a moist environment
