16
Q

What does the hardener do?

A

Shrinks and hardens the films gelatin/emulsion and makes the image permanent for storage quality

*component of the fixer

17
Q

What does the clearing or fixing agent do?

A

Responsible for clearing away the unexposed and undeveloped silver bromide crystals from the films emulsion

18
Q

What does the acidifier do?

A

Maintain acid medium of the fixer and neutralizes/stops developer action, stopping further film development

*component of the fixer

19
Q

What types of malfunctions would cause a decrease in density, speed, and contrast as the film exits the processor?

A

Circulation system
Replenishment system
Temperature control system
Chemistry system

20
Q

What are the cause and effects of over development of the film?

A

Causes: increase in T/T/A, or Due to malfunctions in transport/temperature control and/or circulation/replenishment systems
Effects: increase in film density, speed and chemical fog. Decrease in film contrast

21
Q

What are the effects of insufficient fixing of the film?

A

Leaves the film sticky or wet, milky residue from developer remains in films emulsion, emulsion turns yellow or brown

22
Q

What are the effects of inadequate washing of the film?

A

Hyporetention/retention of the fixer, too much fixer retained in the film emulsion after development

23
Q

What are the cause and effects of inadequate circulation/agitation/filtration of chemistry?

A

Causes: circulation pump fails, blocked circulation lines or kink in tubes, clogged developer filters.
Effects: depletes developer chemistry, uneven developer temperature and development of the film.

24
Q

What are the effects of malfunctions of heating system components?

A

Increased or decreased developer temperature (norm is 94-96F), and density. Chemical fog, cracked or reticulated film emulsion, wet films

25
Q

What are the effects of severe under replenishment of developer?

A

Developer becomes oxidized or depleted, exposed crystals are underdeveloped, density speed and contrast decrease, film emulsion will swell and stick to rollers, will make transport and drying of the film difficult.

26
Q

What are the causes of wet or damp films exiting the processor?

A

Decrease in dryer temperature (norm is 120F), malfunctioning in heater elements, blocked dryer exhaust pipe, chemical failure T/T/A
