Q

רמב”ן על ויהי רעב בארץ

A

When there was a famine, Avraham went down to Egypt to sustain his soul, and know that this was a big mistake and sin, first that he put his wife in danger bc he was scared they would kill him. He should’ve trusted in Hashem. pt 2 was the fact that he left Egypt in the first place and it was b/c of that that his children get exiled in Egypt in the hand of Paro, instead of a punishment here.

This is all a hint that his descendants will go down to Egypt and the Egyptians will be scared and take their women (boys will be killed and women live) from them and how the will leave with lots of gold and silver and cattle and sheep.
There is not one thing that happened to the fathers that is missing from descendants

11
Q

Rav Hirsch on the famine

A

Avraham didn’t have an Avraham to learn from so it was necessary for him to make these mistakes so we can learn from them. Plus, we try to find a balance btwn relying solely on G-d to do miracles and trying to do whatever we can and then relying on Hashem.

Q

Understanding Avot, Rav Hirsch

A

If they didn’t make mistakes it would seem to us like we could never even get close. Showing an AVot’s great traits along with their mistakes shows us that we can and should strive to be them.

Q

Understanding Avot, Rav Kotler

A

The point of the stories of the Avot are not supposed to be on a humanly level. we’re supposed to understand how pure, special, and unhumanly like they were, living only to serve Hashem. We can’t even begin to understand so we shouldn’t try to (relate) or judge

Understanding Avot, Rav David

A

We have to find a very careful balance (and understanding the pitfalls) between not putting them in an ignorant humanly light while not saying they’re so good and high that we can’t even begin to understand and learn from them.

רמב״ן בראשית כז:ג בעבור תברכך נפשי

It was Yitzchak’s intention to give Esav B”A, to inherit the land, and be the subject of the covenant w Hashem and it seems likeRivkah didn’t tell him the prophecy Hashem told her (younger will come out on top), becuase how could Yitzchak go against Hashem’s.
Maybe she didn’t tell him bc of modesty and to not confrtont him and maybe bc she didn’t get permission at the start she was too embarrased to go tell him now. She thought she would just leave it all in Hashem’s hands
