Stories and allegories
What happens י״ב ו-י
Avraham passed through the land as far as Shchem and the Canaanites where there but Hashem said to Avraham this entire land will belong to ur descendants and he built a Mizbeach. He then went to the east of Bethel and built an alter there too and praised Hashem and he journeyed in stages to the Negev (desert)
רש”י בראשית י”ב:ה’
The people that they had acquiered over there are people they converted and introduced to Hashem
רש”י– הלוך ונסוע
Rashi explains that Avraham traveling in stages mean he was in each place for at leaast a month or more
מעשה אבות שימן לבנים ,רמבן
Everything that happened to our Avot will one way or another happen to us. That’s why the Torah is so detailed about what happened, so that we can learn from it. we need those details to teach us about the future
Ma’aseh Avot, Rav Soliveitchik
His actions foreshadow for all of BI, he didn’t have an “avraham” to learn from, the stories that happened aren’t only historical, they’re relevant to us this very day
רמב”ן על ויהי רעב בארץ
When there was a famine, Avraham went down to Egypt to sustain his soul, and know that this was a big mistake and sin, first that he put his wife in danger bc he was scared they would kill him. He should’ve trusted in Hashem. pt 2 was the fact that he left Egypt in the first place and it was b/c of that that his children get exiled in Egypt in the hand of Paro, instead of a punishment here.
This is all a hint that his descendants will go down to Egypt and the Egyptians will be scared and take their women (boys will be killed and women live) from them and how the will leave with lots of gold and silver and cattle and sheep.
There is not one thing that happened to the fathers that is missing from descendants
Rav Hirsch on the famine
Avraham didn’t have an Avraham to learn from so it was necessary for him to make these mistakes so we can learn from them. Plus, we try to find a balance btwn relying solely on G-d to do miracles and trying to do whatever we can and then relying on Hashem.
Understanding Avot, Rav Hirsch
If they didn’t make mistakes it would seem to us like we could never even get close. Showing an AVot’s great traits along with their mistakes shows us that we can and should strive to be them.
Understanding Avot, Rav Kotler
The point of the stories of the Avot are not supposed to be on a humanly level. we’re supposed to understand how pure, special, and unhumanly like they were, living only to serve Hashem. We can’t even begin to understand so we shouldn’t try to (relate) or judge
Understanding Avot, Rav David
We have to find a very careful balance (and understanding the pitfalls) between not putting them in an ignorant humanly light while not saying they’re so good and high that we can’t even begin to understand and learn from them.
Two types of Brit
Grant vs obligation
difference between contract and brit
Covenant is one sided where they’ll automatically get it, while contract both parties have to contribute to get what they want.
what are the two stipulations/ conditions in the Brit
That his descendants will be slaves in Egypt and that Hashem will save them
Pshat of כב
רד”צ הופמןabout yitachaks character
Why everything until now related to Yitzchak has been associated or under Avraham. He hasn’t been independent, he’s been led by Avraham and v submissive. only once his kids are born does he come up in the Torah/history by himself in/on his own terms
