Test 3 Study Guide Flashcards
Drugs that cause gingival enlargement
- Phenytoin
- Clylosporine
- Nifedipine
Phenytoin
For seizures
Cyclosporine
Imminosuppressant drug used for pt. With organ transplants to prevent rejection
Nifedipine
drug used for agina/ventricular arrhythmias
Ingredients in anti-calculus tooth paste
Pyrophosphates
Zinc
Triclosan
Class 1 of malocclusion
Normal bite
Facial profile: normal
Class 2 of Malocclusion
Mandible retrudes (goes distal) Facial profile: retrognathic
Class 3 of malocclusion
Mandibular protrude outward (goes mesial)
Facial profile: prognathic
When pellicles develop
Within minutes
When biofilm develops
5 days
When calculus develops
10-20 days
Avg. is 12 days
How long does it take for mineralization to occur?
24-48 hours
Malocclusion
Anything that isn’t the biologically normal bite
Difference between periopocket and gingival pocket
- Period pocket is caused by a disease or degeneration and involve deeper structures such as the PDL, Cementum, and the bone. Tooth wall is cementum and Perio pockets may be Suprabony or infrabony
- gingival pocket is caused by gingival enlargement. Deeper structures aren’t involved, the tooth wall is enamel and all of them are suprabony
Cross bite
When the posterior teeth are lingual or Buccal from the normal bite
Edge to edge
When the max. And mand. Incisal surfaces occlude (touch)
End to end
When the molars and premolars occlude cusp to cusp as viewed mesiodistally
Open bite
When teeth that are supposed to contact each other don’t. They can’t be brought together
Overjet
When the Maxillary teeth protrude. Measure distance with probe from lingual incisal surface of max. To labial surface of mand.
Underjet (opposite of overjet)
Mandibular teeth protrude outward. Measure with probe from labioincisal of max. I linguoincisal surface of mand. Incisors
Over bite
Normal- incisal edge of max. Teeth are w/ incisal 3rd of mand. Teeth
Moderate- incisal edges of Max. Teeth are w/ middle 3rd of mand. Teeth
Severe-incisal edges of max. Teeth are w/ cervical 3rd of mand. Teeth
Calculus is composed of:
Organic and inorganic and water
Inorganic
- calcium
- phosphate
- carbonate
- sodium
- magnesium
- potassium
Organic
- non vital microorganisms
- epithelial cells
- leukocytes
- Mucin from saliva
Stages of perio lesions
- Initial
- Early
- Established
- Advanced
Initial stage
Occurs within 2-4 days of irritation
- no clinical evidence of chance
- slight gingival redness w/ enlargement
Early stage (stage 2)
Biofilm older and thicker (7-14 days)
Established stage
Fluid and leukocytes migrate into tissue and the sulcus increases forming pocket
- inflammation/redness is obvious
- bleeding with probing
- spongy marginal gingiva
Advanced stage
Bacteria from supragingival enter sulcus..leads to alveolar bone destruction
-CT fibers below JE are destroyed
