Test #3 - Rocks, Soil, Fossils Flashcards
What are rocks made of?
Minerals
What is a mineral?
Solid matter found in nature.
What is soil made of?
Of different matter.
Small bits of rock, mixed with matter that was once living (such as dead plant parts).
What properties did you observe in the soil?
Color -
Texture -
Why did you wear gloves and goggles when conducting the experiment “A closer at soil”?
We follow Science Safety Rules in the lab and wear plastic gloves and goggles when conducting experiments with soil. They protect us.
How did using a hand lens help you with the experiment?
Allowed me to observe the details of the soil better than using our eyes alone.
Why do plants need soil?
The soil holds the root of a plant in place. There are also water and nutrients in the soil for the plants.
What is a fossil?
What is left of an animal or a plant that lived long ago. It can be a footprint, teeth, bones, shells …
What is extinct?
Species that are no longer living (they died out).
Why are fossils important?
They help scientists learn about plant and animals that aren’t alive today because they lived on Earth millions of years ago and are extinct.
How do fossils form?
Fossils form when plants and animals are buried under mud, clay or sand. The soft parts of the plant or animal rot away. The hard parts turn to rocks.
The fossils may be found millions of years later.
