Unattended, violent, or unexplained death (foul play) possible homicide, overdose, etc. or if there is no obvious cause
Coroner’s Case
Refers to the death of liveborn infant within the neonatal period of 27 days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes from the moment of birth (Newborns in the hospital)
Neonatal Death
Fewer than 20 weeks of gestation and a weight of 500 grams or less (1.1 pounds, approximately 17 ounces).
Also known as a miscarriage. Not a stillbirth because it occurs before the 20th week
Early fetal death
Refers to the death of a liveborn infant between 28 days of birth and 364 days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes from the moment of birth (Newborns in the hospital)
Post neonatal Death
20 weeks’ gestation completed but less than 28-week gestation and a weight of 501 grams-1000 grams….Constitutes a “stillbirth” because it’s after the 20th week
Intermediate fetal death
Refers to the death of a liveborn infant IN the hospital, who later dies during the same admission
EX: Live Birth who draws a few breaths and dies 2 hours later after birth

Late fetal death
Who can give mandatory consent for autopsy?
Family – Next of kin (Sibling). If there is more then 1 sibling. They all must agree to the autopsy
What type of autopsy can be performed on an individual?
Full body (Y incision) or a partial (like the brain)
