Test 3 Flashcards
What type of structure supports 365kv and above?
Lattice tower
What is the function of a substation?
They provide the ability to control the POWER FLOW which in a given system.
What is a generation substation?
A station designed to STEP UP THE VOLTAGE and transport it to where it is needed.
Transmission substation?
Used to CHANGE THE VOLTAGE to help integrate a system.
Subtransmission substation?
Used to change transmission voltage to subtransmission voltage. 345-69kv etc.
What’s been trending the last 20 years for insulators?
Polymer
The term suspension might refer to what?
Insulators
How big around can the conductors be?
Up to 1 3/4 inch in diameter and weight 2 1/2 pounds per foot.
Subtransmission voltages?
138, 115, 69, 44kv
What do we do to help protect the public from hanging on our fences?
Build high fences!
What is a lattice steel tower?
Large steel tower built with angled steel designed to carry voltages 345kv and up.
What is a disconnect switch?
They are used to isolate lines and equipment to be worked on. Also connect and disconnect parts of the substation together.
What is the ground grid?
Typically consists of large stranded copper buried 12-18 inches below the ground and spaced out in 8-20 foot squares.
What is a tubular steel pole?
They are direct buried steel poles that are more popular and expensive than wooden poles.
What is a spacer?
Equipment that keeps lines spaced out that run close to each other.
