Test 3 Flashcards
Be able to define the major components of worldview as well as show how Scripture relates to each of these categories.
Epistemology – how we know things
Metaphysics – how does the world operate; immaterial and material system of operations
Etiology – how did things become the way they are
Eschatology – the study of the future
Ethics – how do you now live
Understand how the major components of worldview amplify how all of Scripture is relevant.
Epistemology- Amplifies because without it we would not know Scripture
Metaphysics-Amplifies if we didn’t know how the world worked we wouldn’t understand God
Etiology-Amplifies the study of creation
Eschatology-Amplifies so we know what is to come and
what we are saved from
Ethics-Amplifies Scripture to the world; shows them what we are about
What do people often define in the secular and the sacred? What are some dangers in making such distinctions?
When we separate the secular and the sacred we live double lives; the Bible should be applied everywhere in our lives

a. Theology of wisdom is pervasive and powerful
b. Eden and the Fall is the tragedy of wisdom; it is knowledge of good and evil.
c. Israel, via the law, points to wisdom and disseminates it
d. We as the church are to be witnesses to wisdom; we testify to God’s greatness

Epistemology

b. Authority; looks to the supernatural
c. Epistemology; goes back to the immaterial invading the material
d. Ethics; you need to live transcendent because there is a transcendent being
Know how those four aspects of philosophy played out in Middle Ages/Renaissance
a. Metaphysics; the same
b. Authority; changed to the pope and church over God
c. Epistemology; changes due to authority changing
d. Ethics; roughly the same
Know how those four aspects of philosophy played out in Reformation, Enlightenment

b. Authority; shift to the individual
c. Epistemology; scripture and the individual
d. Ethics; Begins to change because you are as high as Scripture
Know how those four aspects of philosophy played out in Present
a. basically people have nothing absolute, not even reality
b. Ethics; everyone focuses on Ethics and not what is behind and cause them
What are the implications of that on the church? Can the church just be about morality?
We as the church need to focus on the backings of ethics/morality not just them, this is an opportunity and a challenge
Think through some faulty examples of metaphysics that the church might have accepted (e.g., materialism). Explain why they are wrong biblically.
We have become more and more materialistic, trusting in medicine over God, instead of God healings us through the medicine it is simply the medicine.
Be able to explain the biblical theological background of the church starting from Genesis. Explain how the church is a new humanity that demonstrates the gospel overcomes even the Tower of Babel. Look at Acts 2 and Ephesians 2 for your answer. What implications does this have on serving in the church and unity in the church?
The church carries on the mission & message of Israel; to bring the world back to creation. The church is a new humanity as it brings everything back to before Babel, Acts 2 demonstrates this as everyone is effectively united under one language. According to Ephesians 2:13-22 we are as one with Christ.
Implications are that as we serve the church we are to be together in unity to be a better witness and point back to creation.
