diatonic scale
the traditional major or minor scale using 7 pitches per octave.
Chromatic scale
a scale using all 12 pitches per octave (all white and black keys on a piano keyboard).
Whole tone scale
a scale using every other pitch on a keyboard (= 6 pitches per octave).
Octatonic scale
A scale that alternates half steps (adjacent keys on a keyboard) and whole steps (keys with keys between them) (= 8 pitches per octave).
tone color / timbre
Emphasizing contrasting sounds of different instruments.
Symphonic poem
Instrumental piece for opera in one movement, point is to portray an emotion or idea.
Atonality
Any music that is made within a key (bflat minor, F minor)
Serialism
A method of composition in which different musical elements are ordered in a fixed series.
Twelve-tone
A procedure in which the composer applies strict serialist rules to the use of all 12 musical pitches; usually atonal (lots of criticism for using this)
Sprechstimme
A type of singing where you are almost speaking; exaggerated speaking
Collage
multiple musical elements that shouldn’t be together and superimposing them as if it’s two songs at the same thing or back to back things in quick succession
polyrhythm
Multiple rhythms going on at the same time.
polytonality
multiple tonalities going on at the same time.
Polymeter
Multiple meters going on at the same time.
Polychord
2 chords sounded at the same time.
