Test 3 Flashcards
What are the three key conditions for an objective morality?
- objective standard
- human free will
- intrinsic value of humans
Describe “theistic virtue ethics”
We are designed to reflect Gods character…he gives us rules to follow so that we can function at our best
What do materialists believe about morality?
That there is no right or wrong
What do materialists think of the idea of human free will?
There is no free will, we are determined by genes, environment, and evolutionary history
To the materialist, what is just as valuable as human life
There are no qualities differences between animals, humans, or any other life form
Describe the philosophy of moral relativism
No objective ethical norms/ no standard/can’t call me wrong
What is the problem with relativism?
It implies that there are no ethical disagreements, no ethical errors, and progress in ethics is impossible
If someone truly believes in moral relativism, what can’t they do?(list 4)
- can’t accuse others of wrongdoing
- can’t complain about being mistreated
- can’t blame others or accept moral praise
- can’t make changes of unfairness and injustice
In spite of that they may say, explain how actions of all people reveal what they truly do believe in objective moral standards
They don’t want any rules, but they want other people to follow rules/double standards
What is the problem with evolutionary ethics
- it destroys any reason to obey moral norms
- can’t establish which instincts to indulge and which to suppress
- can’t account for altruism, doing something selfless for another
What is the only logical explanation of an objective moral code?
GOD
What evidence do we have in the fossil record that disproves Darwins idea of a gradual morphing of life forms over time?
There was a sudden appearance of major life forms, not a slow gradual build up to what we have today
