What is ground bass?
Musical idea is repeated in the bass while melodies above change.
What is a sonata?
A composition in several movements, for 1-8 instruments. Originated in Italy, then spread.
Who was Vivaldi?
Venice, Italy. Wrote for the girls’ orphanage, a violin virtuoso.
Who was Bach?
A “great,” Leipzig Germany, a Lutheran, worked at a boys school, not famous in his day. Cantatas and fugues.
What is a suite?
Set of dance-inspired movements.
Who was Handel?
Germany-born, but main work was in England. Wrote operas and oratorios, very famous.
What is a oratorio?
An opera w/o the acting, scenery or costumes.
What is a concerto?
Soloist or solo group in contrast to the whole group.
