Test 3 Flashcards
pendred syndrome
genetic disorder that causes early hearing loss in children. It also can affect the thyroid gland and sometimes creates problems with balance.
meningitis
bacterial infection
There is now a vaccine that can be administered to prevent most forms of bacterial meningitis and is 85% effective
ototoxic meds
aminoglycosides
loop diuretics
cancer medication
aminoglycosides
antibiotics used to treat infection
affect outer hair cel function and can produce high frequency hearing loss
Loop diuretics
medication used to help reduce fluid
affect the outer hair cell function and disrupts function of stria vascularis
cancer medication
patients treated with platin drugs have a high likelihood of high frequency hearing loss due to outer and or inner hair cell damage
microtia
small ear
not fully formed; associated with conductive hearing loss
risk indicators for congenital hearing loss
autosomal dominant: hearing loss passed from parent with hearing loss - 50%
autosomal recessive: both parents carry gene- 25%
x-linked: when x chromosome on male is defective, the child is more likely to have hearing loss. when the mother has a defective chromosome, the normal x chromosome can counteract
otitis media
middle ear infection typically treated with anibiotics or PE tubes
rick factors: children under age 2 that are bottle fed, secondhand smoke exposure, daycare, craniofacial abnormalities, eustachian tube dysfunction
screening protocol in newborns
% genetic hearing loss in children
60% of congenital hearing loss is due to genetics
why is early identification of hearing loss important?
hearing loss is the most common birth condition, undetected loss can result in delayed speech, language and social and academic development
Usher syndrome
causes vision loss, hearing loss, and balance issues
Trisomy 21
down syndrome
50-80% have hearing loss- conductive and sensorineural
many have speech and language difficulties and delays
CHARGE
C- coloboma (tissue missing from eye) and cranial nerve abnormalities
H- heart defects
A- atresia of choanea
R- restriction of growth/development
G- genital abnormalities
E- ear abnormalities
50% have profound hearing loss
