Third Battle for Charleston
Nathanial Greene employed a brilliant strategy to wear out his larger opponent in what was called Race to the Dan; he forced Cornwallis to fight, inflicted casualties then retreated. With Cornwallis occupied, Greene began his reconquest of the south and by the end of June the British controlled Savannah and Charleston.
Yorktown Battle
it marked the end of the revolutionary war; Cornwallis built a defense position to protect warships in Yorktown, Virginia; this left him vulnerable to attack by the Americans and French, who trapped him any army and victorious French Navy. This left a sizable British army in America in New York with a change in the British government. People’s favor for war had decreased dramatically
Trenton Battle
December 26, 1776; after Vossed, Deleware attacked Germans; captured 2/3 of the force; small/huge immoral victory. This boosted enlistment.
Saratoga Battle
British attempted to cut New England from the rest of the country; major miscommunication led one British army to Philadelphia turning it to Washington and the other war captured in Upstate New York; British lost a 7th of their men, americans lost 300; convinced the French that the patriots had a chance so they sent reinforcements
Kings Mountain Battle
group of 900 patriots took an army of 1100 loyalists by surprise and soundly defeated them; forced Cornwallis to abandon his plan to invade North Carolina; important because just prior General Gates, who was sent by Washington , was defeated by Cornwallis. february 1775, Massachusetts was declared to be in a state of rebellion and the revoluntionary traders are labelled as traitors and all suspected rebels are order to be disarmed.
bunker hill battle
first major battle of the revolution. In June of 1775 (Breds Hill) colonists took Boston but were engaged by the British in the hills surrounding the city; victory for the British but they lost 1200 of 3000 men and the colonists 450 of 2500. They forced Britain out of Boston in March of 1776.
Alien and Sedition Act (4 Parts)
- Naturalization Act: increased requirements for citizenship
- Alien Friend Act: President could detain/deport non-citizens
- Alien Enemies Act: President could detain non-citizens during war
- Sedition Acts: criminalized false/malicious statements about the government
Stamp Act
passed in 1765; stated all official documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and aimances had to have a special stamp; protested heavily
Boston Massacre
1770, 100+ colonists protested Townsend Act, gathered around customs house in Boston; officers order not to fire; someone fired resulting in chaos and 5 dead and 6 wounded; 11 british soldiers, 2 convicted, 1 standed on thumb
Tea Act
passed in 1773 and lowered the tax on tea but appointed special merchants to sell tea to bypass colonial merchants.
