Test 3 Flashcards
CVA Risk Factors and Symptoms
Affects men and african americans
Flaccid paralysis or hypertonicity, abesent/reduced reflexes, impaired posture, sensory deficits, visual impairments, perceptual dysfunction, cognitive dysfunction, behavioural and personality changes, impaired speech and language skills
OT for CVA
improve motor function, integrate sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functions, fascilitate max level of functional independence, encourage resumption of life roles, promote health management and maintenance of behaviours to prevent reccurrent stroke, sensory regulation, bed positioning, wheelchair positioning
TBI Symptoms
postural dysfunction, impaired motor control and speed, ataxia, sensory changes, decreased functional endurance, dysphasia, disorientation, reduced attention and concentration, impaired initiation, impaired memory, decreased safety awareness, delayed proccessing info, impaired executive function and absent reasoning
Shoulder Subluxation Treatment
PROM: full mobility of scapula and humerus, avoid overhead pulley exercises, positioning, proper handling, sling
OT for TBI
motor retraining, posture/positioning, Constraint Induced Movement Therapy, hypotonic muscle stimulation through sensations, hypertonic muslces stimulated through positioning and handling, bilateral integration, strengthening, endurance
Fascilitate
heavy jt compression, tapping, vibration
Inhibit
neutral/warmth compression, manual pressure to tendinous insertion, light jt compression, positioning in elongated position
Cognitive deficits
initiation and motivation deficits, attention and concentration deficits, disorientation and confusion, memory deficits, sequencing and organization deficits, abstract reasoning and problem solving deficits, thought inflexibility, judgment and safety awareness, generalization and learning deficits, cognitive fatigue
Dysphagia Treatment and Symptoms
feeding program, modified diet, supervision, swallowing interventions
drooling, pocketing of food, coughing, gurgly voice
MS symptoms
fatigue, visual/cognitive disturbances, decreased attention, sensory changes, loss of postural control, dizziness/vertigo, tremor, dysphagia, speech disturbances, heat intolerance, spascticity, weakness, ambulation disturbances, sexual dysfunction, bowel and bladder dysfunction
OT precautions for MS and stuff
avoid over fatigue, mid-late morning treatment sessions, cooler room, use heat modalities, guard against soft tissue injury, monitor for safety issues
OT for MS
encourage participation, fatigue management, control tremors and movement disorders, cognitive compensation, strengthening, endurance, contracture prevention and treatment, P/AROM, ADL’s, seating/wheelchair mobility
Parkinsons Symptoms
tremor (pill-rolling), rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability
OT for Parkinsons
encourage participation in occupation, motor skills and prevention of deformity
ALS Symptoms
upper motor neuron spasticity and stiffness, weakness, low muscle tone, atrophy, speech deficits, swallowing difficulties, hyperactive reflexes
