Test 2 Unit 3 Flashcards
What are the different levels of energy of electrons inside an atom?
- First energy: lowest, closest to nucleus
- Second energy
- Third energy: highest, furthest from nucleus
Which contains more potential energy, Oxygen or Carbon?
Carbon! less electronegative atoms hold their electrons less tightly to their nucleus
What is the relationship between the proximity of an electron and its nucleus and the potential energy?
The farther away an electron is from the nucleus of an atom the greater potential energy that electron possesses
What are the 3 kinds of systems?
- Isolated system
- Closed system
- Open system
Explain and give an example of an isolated system.
Very little energy or matter is exchanged with the environment.
ex: The Universe.
Explain and give an example of an closed system.
Energy is exchanged with the environment, but no matter.
ex: Earth, saucepan with a lid.
Explain and give an example of an open system.
Energy and matter are exchanged with the environment.
ex: Ocean, all living beings.
