What does the shutter release button do? List 4 uses.
It activates the auto-focusing system, measures light coming through the lens, exit menus, wake up the camera.
What is the mode dial?
Used to select from a
variety of different shooting modes.
What is the input dial?
It changes shooting settings (aperture, shutter speed) control of functions (menu settings, choosing & moving of focus points, etc.).
Name the four modes we will be using.
M- Manual
P- Program
Av - Aperture Priority
S- Shutterspeed Priority
What is the LCD screen?
Displays information regarding chosen settings, battery life, and pictures taken on their LCD screen(s).
What does the MENU button do?
Reveals and enables the camera menu
system (where preferences & behaviours are set).
What does the INFO button do?
Changes amount & type of information currently displayed on the camera’s rear LCD screen.
What does the NAVIGATION PAD do?
Multi-use navigation control device. May be used for manipulation of focus points, menu options, the browsing of images while in playback mode
What does the VIEWFINDER do?
allows you to view & compose the subject you intend to photograph.
What does the DIOPTER do?
a mechanism which allows you to adjust your ability to see clearly into the viewfinder.
What does the SHOOTING MENU do?
Options relevant to before taking a picture (Image, Quality, Focus Mode, etc.)
What does the PLAYBACK MENU do?
It is all the options that involve viewing photos.
What does the SET UP MENU do?
Options related to general camera configurations (Time & Date, Beep Volume, etc.)
What does the CUSTOMIZE MENU do?
Options that provide the ability to customize functions of the camera to suit shooting style.
What is the difference between a JPEG and a RAW image?
JPEG has little options for corrections to exposure and white balance. The files are smaller and it is a universal file format. RAW has more options for corrections to exposure and white balance. The files are bigger and they need special software.
When do you use lower ISO settings? What are the settings?
You use lower ISO when it is brightly lit (on a sunny day), they produce clean and noise free photos. The settings will be 100, 200, 300 max
When do you use higher ISO settings? What are the settings?
You use higher ISO when the conditions of the image are darker, and not ideal. These photos come out more grainy and noisy. The settings are 1600, 3200 etc.
How do you hold your camera?
Grasp camera grip with right hand, cradle underside with left hand, for balance part your feet, be comfortable and natural.
How do you activate the focus system?
pressing the shutter release button halfway down & hold.
What are the steps to focus the camera?
Compose your shot. Gently press the shutter release button halfway down and hold. Observe the active focus points. Confirm successful focus via AF confirmation indicator and an
audible ‘beep’. When you feel the camera has focused successfully on your intended subject, gently squeeze the shutter button the rest of the way down to take a photo.
Why might auto focus not work?
The camera might be too close, there might not be enough contrast, subject may be moving, etc.
AF Point selection, what is that?
It means Auto-Focus Point Selection
What are focus points?
Focus points are the indication marks within the viewfinder which indicate where the camera can focus.
How to focus and recompose?
To focus select a point to focus, gently hold shutter release, view finder will focus. To recompose still hold shutter and move camera to get composition.
What is exposure composition?
It is a feature that allows you to purposefully instruct the camera to lighten or darken the photo before you take it.
What modes for exposure composition lighten the photo? Darken the photo?
Modes 1+ and 2+ brightens the photo. Modes -1 and -2 darkens the photo. Mode 0 is the regular exposure setting.
How do you get your photos onto your computer?
Put SD card into SD card reader, plug reader into any USB.
What file do you use after plugging in the SD card reader?
DCIM
