What is photosynthesis
The process used by green plants to make their own food
What do plants use to make their food?
Sunlight
Carbon Dioxide in the air
Water in the soil
What makes plants leaves green?
Chlorophyll
How do plants get energy?
Chlorophyll takes energy from the sun.
It changes water and Carbon Dioxide into sugars
Sugars give the plant energy
What does the plant do with it’s energy?
Grows
Builds roots, stems, branches, leaves, flowers, fruit
How do we know plants are producers?
It makes it’s own food.
Name the 7 life processes:
M - Moving
R - Reproducing
S - Sensing the environment
F - Feeding
B - Breathing
E - Excreting
G - Growing
Explain Herbivores
Eat only plants
Cow, Sheep, Horses, Rabbits, Snail, Giraffe
Name Africa’s 3 Big 5 herbivores
Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant
What is the most dangerous herbivore?
Hippopotamus - 70kg of grass at night
What are our smallest herbivores?
Insects - eat seeds, wood, nectar.
i.e. Aphids suck nectar out of leaves
Explain Carnivores
Meat eating animal
Lion, Cheetah, Tiger, Wolf, Crocodile, Eagle, Shark, Spider
Explain Omnivores
Eat plants and animals
Humans, Chickens, Pigs, Chimpanzee, Dog, Baboon
What is a scavenger?
Feed on carcasses and left overs of dead animals
Jackal, Hyena, Vulture, Dung Beetle
What is a food chain?
Sequence of who eats what.
Animals are linked to plants by the food they eat.
