Test 2 - Matter And Materials Flashcards
Describe the solid state.
A solid has a fixed shape that cannot change easily except by force.
Describe the liquid state.
A liquid doesn’t have a fixed shape but takes on the shape of the container. Liquids can flow.
Describe the gaseous state.
A gas moves around freely and fills the space or closed container.
What gases is air made up of?
Mostly nitrogen and oxygen gas.
Define ‘matter’
Matter is everything that takes up space and has mass.
Define ‘mass’
Mass is the amount of material in an object.
Describe the change during melting.
From solid to liquid.
Describe the change during evaporation.
From liquid to gas.
Describe the change during condensation.
From gas to liquid.
Describe the change during solidifying.
From liquid to solid.
What raw material is used to make glass?
Sand.
What raw material is used to make ceramics?
Clay.
Explain the word ‘malleable’
It means that something can be easily shaped.
What are the raw materials used to make plastics, paints and fabrics?
Coal and oil.
What are raw materials?
Naturally occurring materials like wood, clay, oil etc.
