Covenant Code
The covenant code is the name commonly given to the distinct set of laws that follow almost immediately after the 10 Commandments in the book of Exodus. The code is dominated by cause cystic laws and appears to be one of the oldest set of laws in the Pentateuch
High places
This is a pejorative term of the Old Testament often used for unauthorized worship sites. These may be places devoted to the worship of foreign gods, like Baal, or to Israel’s God. These kings designated as reformers in Israel, like Hezekiah and Josiah, often destroyed these worship sites
Deuteronomic code
The deuteronomic code found in the book of Deuteronomy was first discovered during the region of Josiah and Judah and 621 B.C.E. many centuries after the exodus it contains many ancient laws as well as laws brought into being much near to the time of its discovery it also contained a version of the 10 Commandments
Ehud
described in the biblical Book of Judges as a judge who was sent by God to deliver the Israelites from Moabite domination. He is described as being left-handed and a member of the Tribe of Benjamin.
Isaiah
Isaiah was the 8th-century BC Jewish prophet after whom the Book of Isaiah is named. Within the text of the Book of Isaiah, Isaiah himself is referred to as “the prophet”, but the exact relationship between the Book of Isaiah and any such historical Isaiah is complicated.
Philistines
The Philistines were an ancient people who lived on the south coast of Canaan between the 12th century BC and 604 BC when they were exiled to Mesopotamia by King Nebuchadnezzar II. They are known for their biblical conflict with the Israelites.
Elijah
a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab. Elijah defended the worship of the Hebrew God over that of the Canaanite deity Baal.
Nazirite
Numbers six contains legal regulations for the special religious designation. Among other qualifications, Nazarites her not to cut their hair. Sampson as dedicated as a Nazarite and judges 13.
Mt. Sinai
This is where Moses met with God and received the Law from God.
Holy War
The Old Testament provides many different sets of instructions for fighting the wars to gain possession of Canaan. The element they have in common is that if the Israelites follow the instructions of God he will make them win.

The spot on the ark of the covenant that resembles the throne of God. This is where the Israelites believe God’s presence to remain
Jezebel
According to the Biblical narrative, Jezebel, along with her husband, instituted the worship of Baal and Asherah on a national scale.
Superscription
An introduction of the prophet at the beginning of the book.
Judgement oracle
An Oracle is the form of prophetic speech we now find in literary form in the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Typical has a negative tone.
Shiloh
Shiloh was the major Israelite worship centre before the first Temple was built in Jerusalem.
Temple
This was what the Israelites constructed in Jerusalem and was called the house of worship of God.
Servant songs
A series of poems in Isaiah. Tells of what the servant is supposed to be doing.
Samuel
A prophet who is a figure, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the period of the biblical judges to the institution of a kingdom under Saul, and again in the transition from Saul to David.
Jeremiah
Known as the weaping prophet. According to Jewish tradition, Jeremiah authored the Book of Jeremiah, the Books of Kings and the Book of Lamentations,
Ezekiel
is the central protagonist of the Book of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible.
Absalom
The third son of David. King of Israel, disobeyed his father and died in battle.
Ahaz
Ahaz was 20 when he became king of Judah and reigned for 16 years. Ahaz is portrayed as an evil king in the Second Book of Kings.
Plague
This term refers to the 10 plagues that plagued the land of Egypt when Moses was trying to free the people from slavery. Pharaoh at the time did not pay attention to the plagues until the last plague the plague of death came and took his son
Altar
This was a place of warship where the Israelites would sacrifice to Yahweh
Hannah
The mother of Samuel. However she was barren. She prayed so earnestly that God honored her prayer and gave her a child.
Hosea
One of the minor prophets in the Bible.
Book of the twelve
The twelve “small” books at the end of the Old Testament
Elisha
DescriptionElisha was, according to the Hebrew Bible, a prophet and a wonder-worker.
Tabernacle/ Tent of meeting
In the second half of Exodus Moses receives instructions from God to go to portable sanctuary. God moves off of Mount Sinai and into the structure, which travels with the Israelites through the wilderness. Other text to speak of a tent on the periphery of the wilderness camp where Moses resides in meets with God.
Holiness code
Material found in Leviticus 17 through 26 appears to be a distinctive set of laws that are particularly concerned with the purity of the people of Israel as a characteristic that set them apart from other people scholars disagree concerning whether this code was a complete and distinct literary in city before being in bedded within the book of Leviticus this code addresses subject such as the celebration of festivals in the treatment of slaves which are addressed differently another Old Testament law codes
Saul

Was a prophetess of the God of the Israelites, the fourth Judge of pre-monarchic Israel and the only female judge mentioned in the Bible.
Anoint
As a symbolic action that identified a king in the ancient near East, olive oil was poured on the Kings head. This could be a private event or public ceremony. The Bible describes Samuels anointing of Saul and David.

The sister of Aaron and Moses.

Brief reports of how the prophets were called by God.
Causistic Law
As simple laws are applied in a variety of situations, a body of law grows and develops that answers the questions that arise. The case of the goring Oxon exit is 21 is an example of caustic laws that develop as a simple law like you shall not kill is applied
Deuteronomistic History
Modern biblical scholar ship has arrived in a fairly unified position that the books immediately following Deuteronomy tell the story of Israel in the promised land from the same perspective that produced Deuteronomy. I. E. Joshua Judges Samuel and kings

A significant series of kings from the same family.
Census
Twice in the book of numbers the Israelites are counted. These counts seem to focus on the adult male population. Later, and second Samuel 24, David county Israelites, again only the males, in this act anger is God.
Gideon
was a military leader, judge and prophet whose calling and victory over the Midianites are recounted in chapters 6 to 8 of the Book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible.
Zion
“a Canaanite hill fortress in Jerusalem captured by David and called in the Bible ‘City of David.’”
Eli
High priest of Shiloh. Involved in the story of Hannah and the birth of Samuel
Prophet
This term is used to describe a wide variety of individuals in the old testament. Samuel was one of the earliest. The task of speaking for God seems to be the primary factor that identifies a prophet.
Oracles against the nations
Oracles that prophecy the the judgement of empires and nations around Israel.
Michal
Youngest daughter of king Saul. The first wife of David.
Aaron
Moses’ brother. Went with Moses to pharaoh to free the Israelites. Instigated the golden calf. The first priest of Israel.
Passover
This term refers to what happened to the Israelites the night of the 10th plague when they rubbed the blood of the sacrifice lamb on their door and the angel of death passed over them
Vow
Jacob makes the first biblical Val in genesis 28 verse 20. Leviticus 22 contains legal regulations concerning valves. And judges 11, Jephthah makes available for a battle that results in the sacrifice of his daughter.
Hezekiah
13th king of Judah. Book of kings calls him a very righteous king.
Samson
One of the judges with the most developed story in the book of judges. Possibly an allegory. Killing thousands with only a donkey jawbone. Delilah and hair.
Jereboam
was the first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel after the revolt of the ten northern Israelite tribes against Rehoboam that put an end to the United Monarchy. Jeroboam reigned for 22 years.
Merneptah Stele
A stone monument produced for the Egyptian pharaoh named merneptah at the end of the 13th century BCE
Succession
The determination of the next king in a monarchy. Usual called dynastic succession.
Apodicitic Laws
Some laws in the Old Testament are given in short declarative statements, either positive or negative inform, with little or no explanation. Most of the 10 Commandments are apodictic laws

Jephthah
DescriptionJephthah, appears in the Book of Judges as a judge who presided over Israel for a period of six years. According to Judges, he lived in Gilead.
Babylon
The city of Babylon appears in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Christian scriptures portray Babylon as a wicked city. Hebrew scriptures tell the story of the Babylonian exile, portraying Nebuchadnezzar as a captor.
