Adult Day Care Center
a service that provides mental stimulation, socialization, assistance w/some activities for daily living, & basic observation services often include transportation, meals, therapeutic activities, nursing interventions, & rehab activities. The service is hospital based or freestanding.
Ambulatory Care Facilities
primary health care services for walk-in pts. also known as urgent care, express care, & quick care.
Ambulatory Surgery Centers
one-day surgery centers that perform surgery at a scheduled date & time. pt discharged home when recovered from surgery & is stable.
Assisted Care
residence that provides “a home w/services”
Board & Care Homes
offer housing & custodial care. also known as adult care homes or group homes
Community Health Nursing
nursing that focuses on improving the health status of communities or groups of people through public education, screening for early detection of diseases, & providing services for people who need care outside the acute care setting.
Community Health Nursing Services
nurses work w/many people & groups on prevention & modification of health issues. exists as part of clinic service, HMO, or freestanding
Continuous Care retirement Community (CCRC)
provides living options from independent living, enriched living, assisted living, & skilled nursing home all on 1 campus. residents can move from one level of care to another as needed.
Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS)
funded by taxes. advises president on national health matters.
Free Clinic
used by persons who can not afford health care & are reluctant to use traditional services. the clinic charges a minimal fee.
Free-Standing
health facility not attached to a hospital
General Hospitals
set up to treat a variety of medical/surgical problems.
Group Home
provides personal care services (custodial) to 3-16 residents. provides help w/ADLs, self-administration of medication, meal preparation, & transportation.
Home Health Nursing
provides health services supervised by a licensed professional in a pts home. examples include visiting nurse associations, health departments, & home health agencies.
Hospice Care
end-of-life care for the terminally ill. maintain comfort as death approaches.
Long-Term Care (LTC)
range of medical care to assist persons w/disabilities or chronic care needs.
Nursing Home
offers personal & skilled nursing care (if needed) 24 hrs a day,
Official (Government) Health Care Agencies
local, state, & federal health agencies supported by tax dollars.
Outpatient Clinic
provides health care outside of the hospital setting. staffed by doctors & nurses.
Post-Acute Care (PAC)
also known as subacute care or transitional care. pt discharged from hospital to lower level, less expensive care. will be discharged home when deemed ready.
Primary Care
the point in which a person enters the health care system.
Private Health Care Agencies
agencies that are generally proprietary (for profit) & that charge a fee for service. the primary focus is curing the illness.

for-profit hospitals
Public Health Care Agencies
made up of official & voluntary health care agencies.
Rehabilitation
after acute care is completed, treatment may continue in order to bring person up to maximum functioning.
Residential Care
broadly defined, for reasons of age or impairments. falls between skilled care & intermediate care facilities.
Skilled Care
trained medical professionals provide a higher level of care.
Skilled Nursing Facility for Severely Disabled (SNFSD)
provides 24 hr care for persons w/sever mental disabilities.
Specialized Hospital
limited to 1 type of pt, such as woman or children.
Teaching & Research Hospital
private or public hospital that focuses on treating pts; training docs, nurses & other health professionals; & research & development.
Transitional Care
subacute care at a lower level facility after acute (hospital) care is completed, but pt is not ready to go home.

international organization that deals w/world issues. has representatives of many countries.
U.S. Public Health Services (USPHS)
division of department of health & human services. made up of 6 agencies.
Voluntary Community Hospital
nonprofit hospital operated by community association or religious organization.
Voluntary Health Care Agencies
not-for-profit, nonofficial health care agencies that complement official health agencies & meet the needs of persons w/a specific disease.
Wellness Center
promotes wellness. includes nutritional counseling, exercise programs, stress reduction, & weight control programs.
World Health Organization (WHO)
international health agency of the united nations, located in Geneva
