Test 2 Flashcards
Normal RBC range
What do abnormal findings imply?
Females: 4.2-5.4 million/uL
Males: 4.7-6.1 million/uL
Decreased: Possible anemia or hemorrhage
Increased: Possible chronic hypoxia or polycythemia Vera
Normal Hemoglobin level (Hgb)
Abnormal results significance?
Females: 12-16 g/dL
Males: 14-18 g/dL
Decreased: Possible anemia or hemorrhage
Increased: Possible chronic hypoxia or polycythemia Vera
Normal Hematocrit (Hct)
Abnormal significance?
Females: 37-47%
Males: 42-52%
Decreased: Possible anemia or hemorrhage
Increased: Possible chronic hypoxia or polycythemia Vera
Normal WBC count?
Abnormal significance?
5000-10,000/mm3
Increased: infection, inflammation, autoimmune, and leukemia
Decreased: Prolonged infection, bone marrow suppression
Normal Iron (Fe) levels?
Abnormal significance?
Females: 60-160 mcg/dL
Males: 80-180 mcg/dL
Increased: liver disorders, hemochromatosis, megaloblastic anemia
Decreased: Fe deficiency anemia, hemorrhage
Normal platelet count?
Abnormal significance?
150,000 - 400,000 /mm3
Increased: polycythemia Vera or malignancy
Decreased: Bone marrow suppression, autoimmune, hypersplenism
Normal PT time? INR? PTT?
PT: 11-12.5 sec
INR: 0.7-1.8
** When using Warfarin, therapeutic INR range is 2.0-3.0 regardless of PT
PTT: On Warfarin is 1.5-2.0, maybe greater
Normal serum ferritin
Significance?
Normal range is 12 - 300 ng/mL
Less than 10 ng/mL can indicate iron-deficiency anemia
