Test 2 Flashcards
What is Breat’s Rule
Has to do with the stability of alkenes
A bridged bicyclic compound cannot have a double bond at a bridgehead position unless one of the rings contains at least 8 carbon atoms.
Rules for numbering in nomenclature
(1) most pi bonds on a single chain
(2) longest chain
(3) smallest numbers on most pi bonds/ subs
How does stability affect bond dissociation energy
highest BDE means least stable
most stable: 3 > 2 > 1 :least stable
Stability of carboanions
stability increases as the number of carbons it is connected to decreases
more resonance, more stable
most stable: 1 > 2 > 3: least stable
Stability of alkenes
Look at Bredt’s rule
small ring constraints
more carbons connected to the pi bonds, the more stable
Enantiomers
If all stereocenters have flipped
Diastereomers
If some stereocenters have flipped
meso compound
If all connected atoms on even number stereocenters but half oppose other half
