What are the general epistles?
New grouping of books after Philemon, with Hebrews being the longest and Jude being the shortest.
Why are they called general epistles?
They were written to a wider audience (who was unknown) with a wide range of subject matter.
Who wrote the book of Hebrews?
Unknown but suggested that it was a student of Paul- Luke, Barnabus, or Apollos
What was the audience of Hebrews?
The Jewish believers
Did Paul write the book of Hebrews? Why or why not?
It is believed that he did not write it, because it was written in a Greek style that is different than Paul’s and also did not include a greeting that Paul typically included in his letters.
When was Hebrews written? What are some reasons for this dating?
40-60AD
It is believed that the temple was still standing when Hebrews was written, and cites Timothy being released which says it would have been written when he was still alive.
What was the purpose/circumstances for the writing of the book of Hebrews?
To warn listeners not to turn back to Judaism and to stay true to faith in Jesus Christ.
What does your textbook suggest might be a good way to think of the epistle to the Hebrews?
Sermonic epistle, it reads like a sermon.
What are the two main points of the book of Hebrews?
- to remind readers of the greatness of Jesus Christ

No.
- Hebrews 11 draws its examples of faith from the OT
- Hebrews refers to the OT for its own foundation

How is it that the church can be guilty of neglecting the book of James?
Because it places so much stress on good works, which seems to contradict Paul’s emphasis on faith.
Explain the apparent contradiction between James 2:24 and Romans 3:28.
James is saying that you are made righteous by your works, while Paul is saying that good works by the law does make you justified, but only by faith you can be in justified in rightrousness.
Who is James?
a servant of God, most likely the half brother of Jesus.
What is the dating of the book of James?
40-60AD
What is the style of the book of James?
Combines elements of both prophecy and wisdom literature
