Church Father
title given to theologians of the first 8 centuries whose teachings made a lasting mark on the Church
Dead Sea Scrolls
discovered in 1947 near the Dead Sea. These scrolls contain certain Hebrew manuscripts. They were used to study the OT and learning Jewish practices at the time of Jesus.
Exegesis
the process used by the scholars to discover the meaning of biblical text.
Literal sense
the meaning conveyed by the words of scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation
Literary genre
a type of writing that has a particular form, style, or content
Liturgy of the Hours
the prayer of the Church; known as the Divine Office.
Vulgate
St. Jerome’s fifth-century Latin translation of the bible into the common language of the people of his day.
Apocryphal books
Meaning “hidden”; literature related to the Bible but not included in the canon of the Bible; -Protestants and Jews use the term to OT books that Catholics consider inspired- Sirach, wisdom, Baruch, 1 & 2 Maccabees, Tobit, and Judith
Canon
Official list of inspired books of the Bible; Ex: Catholics list 46 OT and 27 NT books in their canon
Deuterocanonical
Greek “ second canon” books that were not found in Hebrew Scriptures; Sirach, Wisdom, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith
Idolatry
Giving worship to something or someone other than the true God
Major Prophets
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel whose books were long in the OT
Minor Prophets
The twelve prophets of the OT who had brief books
Patriarchs
The “ fathers of the faith,” male rulers, elders, or leaders. The Patriarchs of the faith of Israel are abraham, isaac, and jacob
Remnant
Exiles and former exiles who remained faithful to YHWH during the time of captivity and who were expected to restore Jerusalem
