TEST 2/20/14 Flashcards
Intertidal zone
The area between the highest tide line and the lowest tide line
Estuary
Where the fresh water of a river and the salt water of an ocean meet
Neritic zone
The region of shallow ocean water over the continental shelf
What are some examples of an estuary
Chesapeake bay
Hudson River
Red tide
Harmful algae bloom
Planktos
Wanderer or drifter
3 categories of ocean organisms
Plankton
Nekton
Benthos
Invertebrate
Without a backbone
Echinoderms
Invertebrates with a internal skeleton (endoskeleton)
Radial symmetry
A body form in which the body parts (usually in multiples of 5) are arranged like the spokes of a wheel ex. starfish, sea urchins
Crustaceans
Crabs
Arthropods
Invertebrates that have a segmented body, jointed appendages, and an external skeleton (exoskeleton)
Aquatic
Watery
What are the two types of aquatic biomes?
Marine biome
Freshwater biome
How much of the earth is water
3/4
What is larger and deeper: a lake or a pond?
Lake
What factors effect all aquatic biomes?
- Sunlight
- temperature
- oxygen
- salt content
- water pressure of the biome
Where do streams begin
Mountains
What are the most common producers in aquatic ecosystems?
Algae
Do fish breathe air?
No they remove dissolved oxygen from water as water passes through their gills
What do aerators in aquariums do?
Mix oxygen into the aquarium water
Can light penetrate into the deep zone of the open ocean?
No. It is completely dark. Light only penetrates to a depth of a few hundred meters.
What changes in an estuary with tides?
The saltiness. At low tide the water is mostly fresh. At high tide it is mostly salty
What are the two categories of plankton?
Phytoplankton- plant-like, preform photosynthesis
Zooplankton- animal-like
