The Open Door Policy
Initiated by John Hay: stated that all nations have equal trade with China in order to prevent European monopolization of Chinese markets. (Europe and China disliked this policy)
Taiping Rebellion
Chinese citizens attempting to overthrow Qing Dynasty after China enters into Century of Humiliation- citizens blame chinese gov. for losing the Opium wars.
Qing Dynasty
The Chinese gov. who allowed trade with the British and allowed in Opium- signed Treaty of Nanjing
Opium War
Great Britain lost money by trading with China (they gave more than they received) and therefore decided to get China addicted to Opium
Treaty of Nanjing
Ended the first opium war: caused China to increase trading ports with Britain from 1 to 5 and cede control of Hong Kong.
Japan
After catholicism was brought into Japan by the Portuguese, Japan closes themselves off from the world so to not end up like China. Eventually, they let in the Dutch who agree not to have a religious influence.
Boxer Rebellion
Anti-imperialist Chinese citizens who did not want foreign influence/wanted to expel foreigners and attempted to get rid of the British without help of their gov. (Doesn’t work because Britain is industrialized)
Great White Fleet
The U.S wants a strong navy like Britain and sails to Japan: Japan eventually has to industrialize to keep world powers out.
Big Stick Diplomacy
Teddy Roosevelt “Speak softly and carry a big stick” (use military to intimidate- if denied, take it anyway)
