Test 2 Flashcards
Australian Ballot
Voting secretly
Caucus vs. Primary
Caucus - Go to public area, ppl in community get together at 8 pm, first part of caucus for both parties candidates give speeches, for republicans after speeches given ballots and filled out secretly, but democrats have speeches then go into preference groups and heads are counted (not Australian, peer pressure)
Primary - Put thing in machine and no one knows how you vote
Pardon
Pre-emptively, just sentenced, but president comes in and says you don’t have to serve and if already in prison you just leave
If convicted still a felon, just no punishment
Can happen before someone is even charged of anything, can’t even charge now
Reprieve
President postpones punishment (serve, but not until next month)
Clemency
Taking mercy on ppl
Commutation
Reducing fine or time in prison (reduce punishment)
Are the president’s pardon and reprieve and commutation powers just for federal or for everything?
Federal; governors do pardons for states
Bully pulpit
Using the office of the presidency to speak to the American people in their presidential respect (ex. state of union address)
Faithless elector
Candidate wins electoral votes by winning popular votes, winner-take-all should get all votes, most states say you need to vote for the person who got the popular votes in your state, but sometimes there is no law that says this, elector can vote for basically whoever
Power of the purse
Power to give money legislation
Executive department vs. organization
Department strictly in control of executing bills congress passes, but if organization works alongside congress, not putting laws into place, just doing something and getting government assistance with that (like a contractor ig)
Brokered convention
No one wins majority, delegates can now choose whoever they want regardless of what the people said
WHich party has superdelegates? What does the other party have?
1.Democratic
2.Unpledged delegates/party insiders
2000 election
Bush managed to steal ALL of floridas delegates by 357 popular votes
Further recount for entire state, initial recount ppl were counting balots under certain circumstances but not in other counties, no uniform way of how ppl were supposed to count these ballots by hand, you’re now interrupting something that is in the constitution
Are most of the states proportional voting? WHat were they a few years ago?
Yes, just recently switched from winner takes all
