Agoraphobia vs Social Phobias
Agoraphobia
- Fear of actual symptoms of anxiety
- Seek others for comfort
Social Phobias
- Fear of the social context
- Avoid others for comfort
PTSD
Why was the war so stressful?
- No group identity– soldiers were shipped as massive recruits
- Soldiers felt there was no purpose because Americans were in opposition to the war
- Lack of an all out attempt to win the war
- Removal from combat was abrupt
Factors that affect the likelihood of PTSD:
Features of the TRAUMA:
- Intensity of the exposure
- Duration of exposure to trauma
- extent of threat posed by trauma
- Nature of the trauma
- Humans
- Natural Disaster
Features of the PERSON:
- pre-trauma psychological adjustment
- family history of psychopathology
- cognitive and coping styles
- feeling of guilt
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- At least 6 months of excessive anxiety and worry
- Must be on going more days than not
- Must be difficult to turn off or control the worry process
- Accompanied by symptoms such as sleep disturbance and irritability
- Leads to procrastination and over preparation
Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia
Panic Disorder: individuals experience severe, unexpected panic attacks where they think they are dying/ losing control
Agoraphobia: fear and avoidance of situations in which a person feels unsafe or unable to escape
Specific Phobias
- Irrational fear of a specific object or situation that markedly interferes with an individuals ability to function
- Feared situation almost always provokes anxiety
- Significant impairment/ distress
Separation Anxiety Disorder
- Characterized by unrealistic and persistent worry that something will happen to self or loved ones when apart as well as anxiety about leaving loved ones
Social Anxiety Disorder
- Extreme or irrational concern about being negatively evaluated by other people
- This sometimes makes people manifest/ distress
- Causes avoidance of feared situations, or endurance with extreme distress
Selective Mutism
- Childhood disorder characterized by a lack of speech
- Must occur for more than one month and cannot be limited to the first month of school
- High comorbidity with Social Anxiety Disorder
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
- Trauma Exposure
- Continued re-experiencing
- Avoidance
- Emotional Numbing
- May cause reckless or self-destructive behavior
- May cause Interpersonal Problems
- Refers to problems that persist for more than one month after trauma
Acute stress Disorder
- Very much like PTSD
- Occurs within the first month after trauma but differently emphasizes the severe reaction some people have immediately
Reactive Attachment Disorder
- Abnormally withdrawn and inhibited behavior
- less receptive to support from caregivers
- Child will very seldom seek out a caregiver for protection, support, and nurturance
- Will seldom respond to offers from caregivers to provide this kind of care
Disinhibited Self Engagement Disorder
- Child shows no inhibitions whatsoever to approaching adults
- Child might engage in inappropriately intimate behavior by showing a willingness to immediately accompany an unfamiliar adult figure
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- The dangerous event is a thought, image, or impulse that the client attempts to avoid completely
Tic-Disorder
- Involuntary Movements
- Often co-occurs in patients with OCD
- Sometimes tics are used as compiles behaviors– performed to relive anxiety associated with obsessions
