TEST Flashcards
When a solid dissolves in a liquid, the solid is said to be
Soluble
Which substance cannot be compressed?
Solids and liquids
How can we produce different flame colours?
Orange flame: collar fully closed
Roaring blue flame: collar fully open
Quiet blue flame: collar nearly fully open
What does miscible mean?
Liquids can mix through each other - no layers present
What is diffusing?
When gases or liquids mix through each other.
What are the states of matter?
solid to liquid - melting
liquid to solid - freezing
liquid to gas - boiling/evaporating
gas to liquid - condensing
solid to gas - subliming
What does filtration separate?
Insoluble materials from soluble materials and liquids.
How are particles arranged in the 3 states of matter?
solids - tightly packed
liquids - closely packed with some space
gases - very far apart
solutions - the solute is spread throughout the solvent
Hazard symbols can be drawn
Recognise corrosive, flammable, toxic, irritant, oxidising
I can recognise what state a substance will be in if I know its melting and boiling point.
If the temperature is lower than the melting point it will be a solid
If the temperature is between the melting point and boiling point it will be a liquid
If the temperature is higher than the boiling point it will be a gas
Fractional distillation separates
Liquids which have different boiling points
What is a mixture?
Substances which are not bonded to each other. Mixtures are easy to separate.
What is a compound?
Different elements bonded together. Compounds are difficult to separate.
What shape is a crystal?
Crystals can have different shapes but they are all regular and have sharp edges.
What does saturated mean?
This is when no more solute will dissolve in a solvent
