test Flashcards
what is every substance in the universe made up of?
Atoms
What are elements?
Elements are substances that are made up of one type of atom
What are some properties of mettalic elements?
- tend to be shiny (lustrous)
- are solid at room temprature
- are good conductors of heat and electricity
- can be bent or hammered (malleable)
- can be streched into wires (ductile)
What are some properties of non metallic elements?
- tend to be dull
- do not conduct heat or electricity (are insulators for electricity and heat.)
- break or crumble when you bend them (brittle)
What is a monatomic?
A monatomic is an element that is made up of many individual atoms
what is a molecular
it is a cluster of atoms
What are lattices?
there are grid-like srtuctures of atoms
what is compounds?
a compound are substances made of lattices or identicsl molecules with two or more types of atoms
what is a mixture?
a mixture is any combination of two or more elements or compounds
what is an alloy?
a alloy is a mixture of metal with other metals or non-metals
what is a physical change? with an example
a change that does not resault in a new substance being produced
e.g
change in shape
Substances that make up a mixture can be easily seperated- true or false?
true
How many substances together is considered a mixture?
two or more
what is expansion?
When an object is
heated, it will expand
(get bigger).
The particles will also
move quicker.
what is contraction?
When an object is
cooled, it will contract
(get smaller).
The particles will also
move slower.
