What are the Dead Sea Scrolls?
a bunch of scrolls found in a sea cave near the Dead Sea that helped scholars to learn more about the Bible
Salvation History
the story of God’s actions and the people’s responses over many centuries
reasons to study the Old Testament
- remember what God has done for us

What books are in the Pentateuch?
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

process of trying to find the true meaning of a Bible passage; critical interpretation

why should we engage in Biblical exegesis?
it allows us to see the whole context
parts of the spiritual sense
allegorical, moral, and anagogical

differences in the creation stories?
in the first, man and woman were created together; in the second, woman was created from man

Does the Church believe the creation story should be read literally?
no: it is just a way to show how God cares for the world and how he created it
original sin
the sin that all of humanity is born with (absolved through baptism); caused by Adam and Eve going against God and eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

the distress or tension created by treating another person, or being treated as a mere object for use rather than as a gift to be honored and loved; one result of sin

what is sin?
- alienation from God
- separation from God
- cascades down through generations
Cain and Abel
sons of Adam and Eve; Cain killed Abel because God favored Abel’s sacrifice
spiritual truth from “Cain and Abel”
- you cannot hide from God

Why does God ask Noah to build an ark?
to save his family and all of the animals
