Why did the battle of Hastings start?
Because the Claiments to the throne all wanted to be the King but Harold Godwinson was chosen by the Witan. So Harold Hardrada fought against Harold Godwinson and Harold Godwinson won. As he was celebrating his victory William of Normandy (Duke William) built a fort there and camped at Hastings. So Harold Godinson travelled to Senlac Hill 5 miles from Hastings and stayed there.
Why did they need to chose who would be the next King?
Because King Edward was died at the age of 61 on 5th January and had no children this meant that they had to decide who would be king from the three Claiments to the throne.
Wo did the Witan chose to be King and why?
He chose Harold Godwinson to be King because of King Edward’s dying words.
