“What hath God Wrought?”
The first message transmitted by telegraph on May 24th 1844. Officially opened the Baltimore-Washington telegraph line. Witnessed by congress, Samuel Morse dispatched this telegraph from the U.S. capitol to Alfred Vail at a railroad station in Baltimore, Maryland.

Alexander Graham Bell
In 1876 he invented the Telephone. In 1877 he formed the bell telephone company.
Gulielmo Marconi
Developed, demonstrated and marketed the first successful long-distance wireless telegraph. By 1899 he flashed the first wireless signal across the English Channel and 2years later received the letter “S” telegraphed from England to Newfoundland. Originally called “The Father of Radio” and “Inventor of Radio.” Obtained British patent in 1896.

Reginald Fessenden
Invented the modulation of radio waves, the “heterodyne system,” which allowed the reception and transmission on the same aerial w/o interference. On Christmas Eve (1906) he publicized the first radio broadcast of the Christmas story in Brant, Massachusetts.
Lee Deforest
Amplified radio signals, getting to them to work better. Was the first to do on the scene news reports. In 1910 he did a live broadcast of top talent Enrico Caruso.

WWI
1917 to 1919. Navy took control of the telegraph because it was a way for them to communicate with ships at sea.
Department of Commerce
In 1912 they implemented and enforced the Radio Act. It mandated that all radio stations in the U.S be licensed by the federal government. KDKA received the first radio license on Oct. 27, 1920.
Harding – Cox
The results of this presidential election was the first commercial radio broadcast. It was announced by KDKA on Election Day, Nov. 2, 1920.
WEAF New York (ads)
Signed on March 2, 1922 it was the first radio station in New York. Owned by AT&T Western Electric it eventually came to be called WNBC.
Queensboro Corporation
They paid WEAF a hundred dollars to have them present property in Long Island over the radio. This made them the first to have an advertisement on radio.
William S. Paley
Founded CBS in his early 20s, 1926, and was president of it for 50 years. Became very popular and influential in mass media.
David Sarnoff
Was a RCA chairman who helped launch NBC (1926).

Popular stuff, Tv shows, comedy sketches, game shows.

Federal Radio Commission
Created in 1926, they regulated radio use in the U.S. Later on (1936) it was replaced by the Federal Communications Commission by the Communications Act of 1934
Amos ‘n’ Andy
Based on Sam ‘n’ Henry from Gosden and Correll’s time in Chicago, A&A was broadcast on WMAQ. The characters were two black men set in Harlem but they were played by two white men. Blacks disliked it due to how it negatively shown a light on their culture, making them seem uneducated and clueless about politics/economics.

Radio’s Golden Age
Lasted from the 1920s until the late 1940s when television became popular.
Vladimir Zworykin
A pioneer of television technology, he invented a television transmitting and receiving system employing a cathode ray tubes. He demonstrated this system at a radio convention in 1929. David Sarnoff, an RCA executive was in attendance. He financed Zworykin’s invention and named him the Director of RCA’s Electronic Research Lab in New Jersey.

Started Skit comedy. In 1950 he appeared on “Your Show of Shows.”
