test 1 deck 2 Flashcards
activity theory
argues that the more active people are the more likely they are to be satisfied with life
social class and life history
affect ones path through out the life course
- such as earlier life events, cultural, historical events
- unpredictable non normative life events
characteristics of generativity
- attitude of care and inclusion
- open to experience
- tolerant of others
- creative productive tendencies
- broad scope of concern
- other focused (next generation)
- conscious of being a guide
- generous mentor, share knowledge
- encourages others to lead in their own style
- emphasis on interpersonal values
characteristics of stagnation
- attitude of exclusion (rejectivity)
- intolerant of differences
- conservative tendencies
- narrow scope of concern
- self asorbered
- self interests focused on personal needs
- little selfless giving and outreach to others
- enforces current practices and conventions
- emphasis on instrumental values
compression of morbidity theory
aim for healthy old age followed by rapid decline and death which would likely- enhance quality of life - extend life expectancy and health span - reduce health giver costs and caregivers burden
normal aging
is an underlying time dependent biological process that although not itself a disease, involves functional loss and susceptibility to disease and death age related decline
chance
the result of External Events - random negative factors that damage the cells of the body systems over time
fate
an Internal Necessity - built in genetic program that proceeds inevitably to death
wear and tear theory
see aging as a result of chance ex. our joints and bone become damaged over time as a result of living
somatic mutation theory
little scientific evidence to support at this time - notes that cells can be radiation and as a result mutate or experience genetic changes - modern wear and tear theory
accumulative waste theory
postulate that the accumulation of waste products eventually interferes with cell metabolize and lead to death
autoimmune theory
say that the system may eventually become defective and no longer distinguish the bodies own tissue from foreign tissue (inflammation) -body may begin to attack itself as suggested by the increase with age of autoimmune diseases ex. arthritis, lupus multiple sclerosis
ageing clock theory
claims that aging is programmed into our bodies like a clock ticking away from the moment of conception
-aging is caused by a gland like the hypothalamus ex. menopause
cross linking theory
claims that the bodily changes that we see as we age results from the accumulation of cross-linking compounds in the collagen s\which gradually becomes stiff
free radical theory
damage created by free radical (molecules that appear as a by product of oxygen metabolism in cells) eventually give rise to the symptoms we recognize as aging
