Test #1 Flashcards
Biology
study of living things
Astrology
The beleif that the stars can interpete future
geology
study of the earth’s surface and interior
science
knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe
Characteristics
- Discovers and documents naturalphenomena
- Constructs and evaluates explanations of the phenomena(theories)
- Objective- (not affected by personal bias and must be well-defined and specific)
- Testable- (must have the ability tobe proven wrong)
- Public- (peer review via articles, journals, etc.)
pseudoscience
“pseudo” means false, so pseudoscience means “false science” 2. also called: fringe science, junk science, hoax science, bad science 3. ideas are not open to scientific evaluation (cannot be tested) 4. study or claim is not backed with any hard data or facts 5. lack of evidence is taken to support that a claim could be true 6. based on dogma and uncritical belief
observation
An observation is the gathering
of information by using our five
senses:
inference
Explanations or interpretations of the things you observe. Based on reasoning from what you already know Often change when new observations are made.
atomic number
Number of protons in a element
neutron
neutral subatomic particle
proton
positive subatomic particle
atomic mass
number of
protons plus neutrons
element
pure substance that cannot be broken down by
physical or chemical means
Dmitri Mendeléev
Dmitri Mendeléev created
the first version of the periodic
table.
groups
a group is a column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements. There are 18 numbered groups in the periodic table
periods
harizontal rows on the periodic table
atoms
All matter is made of atoms.
all atoms have
Protons – positive charged
particles
Neutrons – neutral charged
particles
Found in center of atom, called a
nucleus
physics
study of nonliving matter and
energy
chemistry
study of nonliving matter and
energy
periodic table
The periodic table of elements arranges all of the known chemical elements in an informative array
Differentiate between science and pseudoscience
Science is testable, is objective (set aside their
personal feelings) Backed up by hard facts
pseudoscience
Not Testable, may be hostile in face of
disagreement, study or claim is not backed with any
hard data or facts
Provide examples of sciences and pseudosciences
Scince is like Biology,
pseudosciences would be like Astrology
Differentiate between an observation and an inference
An observation comes from 5 senses while inference
Explanations or interpretations
of the things you observe.
• Based on reasoning from what
you already know
• Often change when new
observations are made.
Differentiate qualitative and quantitative observations
Quantitative observations measurement of what we observe numerical examples:The flower has seven petals. You have 8 new emails.
Qualitative observations description of what we observe. examples: The flower has white petals. The lemon tastes sour
Provide examples of observations and inferences
Observation, the milk smells sour,
inferences, the milk must be spoiled
what are the earths four spheres
(lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere)
