Test 1 Flashcards
Bottom supported can work in shallow water up to 33` - not used currently
Inland Barge
Bottom supported. Most versatile bottom supported rig. Can work over a multi-well platform if rig is “cantilever” type which most are. Water Depth = 15’ - 550’ depending on make and model. Requires good weather to move, but insensitive to weather when jacked up.
Jack up
Bottom supported. Can handle very high deck and derrick loads. Limited in water depth (15’ – 85’).
Submersible
Floating. Less weather sensitive than a drill ship. Limited deck load capacity.Water depth range is 200’ – 12,000’.
Semi- submersible
Floating and most mobile of all offshore rigs. Highest deckload capacity of floating rigs, but also most weather sensitive and has highest fuel consumption. Water depth = 200’ – 12,000’.
Drill Ship
Requires a pre-installed platform. Bottom supported, or buoyant (TLP or Spar), least weather sensitive of all offshore rigs, except when rigging up or rigging down which is quite an endeavor. High rig up costs, but good for multi-well developments because they typically cost less than Jack-ups
Playform
There are three fundamental functions that must be performed during drilling. List these below.
a) Break the rock
b) Remove the broken rock (cuttings) to clean the hole.
c) Maintain the wellbore stable (keep the hole open, prevent kicks or loss of return)
6 major rig systems
a) Power
b) Hoisting
c) Circulating
d) Rotary
e) Well control
f) Well monitoring
to conduct the drilling fluid from the ocean floor to the drilling vessel
marine riser or drilling riser
both have the same function; allows lateral movement of the vessel.
ball joint / flex joint
to keep the drilling riser under constant tension with the vertical
movement of the vessel (heave)
pneumatic tensioning device
allows the vertical movement of the vessel
slip joint
connected to the surface casing it allows hanging of all remaining casings in the well and has a connector profile for the connection of the BOP .
high pressure housing
allows the deviation of fluid flow from the riser to overboard or to the mud gas separator.
diverter system
Describe the function of a Pipe Ram valve in the BOP system?
Function: Close the annular space between against the drillpipe.
Name the two general types (classes) of rig power systems
a) The diesel-electric type
b) The direct drive type
Write a simple, but complete sentence explaining why calculating the displacement of drillpipe based only on the O.D. and I.D. underestimates the actual pipe displacement.
Because calculation based on OD and ID only neglects the tool joint dimensions and any existing internal or external upset of the connections.
Name three components of the rotating system.
a) Kelly
b) Rotary table
c) Drill pipe and drill collars
Name three components of the well monitoring system.
a) Weight indicator
b) Driller`s panel
c) Pit level indicator
Name three components of the circulating system.
a) Mud pumps
b) Mud pits
c) Solids control equipment
Name three components of the hoisting system.
a) Derrick
b) Block and tackle
c) Drawworks
Write a simple, but complete sentence describing the function or purpose of having blind rams (not blind- shear) in a BOP stack.
Close the well when there is no string in the well
Write a simple, but complete sentence describing the function or purpose of having variable bore pipe rams in a BOP stack.
To close the well, when more than one size of drillpipe is in the hole.
What is the name of, which also describes, the procedure used on a rig to minimize the risk of a drilling line failure due to wear or fatigue?
Slip and cut operation
