Test 1 Flashcards
Prefix:
Beginning of word; often refers to time, location or number
Suffix
Syllable or word at the suffix of word; often refers to preceded or disease
Word root:
Central part of word that contains the basic meaning of the word
Combining vowel or form:
Usually a vowel that helps connect two word parts
Cell membrane:
Bi lipid, simi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cell
Cytoplasm
The liquid that fills the cell
Nucleus
The brain of the cell that controls cell activity
DNA:
Deoxyribonucleic acid, the blue print for cell activity
located within chromatic strands in nucleus or in chromosomes during mitosis
Where is DNA found ?
Chromatin strands in nucleus or chromosomes during mitosis
Nucleolus
Where ribosomes are produced
Ribosome:
Protein producing organelles of the cell
Where are ribosomes found?
Cytoplasm and on rough ER
Smooth ER:
Organelle that is relatively free of attached ribosomes
-and is the site of protein and lipid production
Rough ER
Organelle that helps protein production and contains lots of attached ribosomes
Golgi Apparatus/: Gogli Body
Organelle that “packages” proteins and other molecules
Mitochondria
The power house of organelle of the cells, produces ATP
Vesicles
Membrane bound proteins that are found in the cell
Lysosome
Membrane bound vesicles that contain enzymes to help fight bacteria or destroy old cells and foreign materials
Four types of tissues and their function:
Connective: supports, connects
Muscle: move, protects, produce heat
Nerve: controls, communicates
Epithelium: secretes, protects
Definition of homeostasis
The ability of a cell organism to maintain a stable internal environment in the face of changing OUSTISE/EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT
Midsagittal or median plane:
Divides body into equal right & left halves
Frontal or coronal plane:
Divides body into front and back halves
Transverse plane
Decides body into upper and lower
Anterior
The front of body, also the ventral
