phoebe palmer, an American evangelist campaigning in Britain, had been castigated by a male minister in a newspaper article. Catherine saw it and in response, encouraged by her husband, wrote a pamphlet entitled, “Female Ministry, Women’s Right to Preach the Gospel.”

A

Skeleton armies dressed up like salvationist and carried flags through the street, with a skull and crossbones on them, to mimic The Salvation Army and keep them from ministering in the streets. The local landlords and brewery owners would hire them to do this. The bonnets and hats were designed to help protect the heads of salvationists during open air meetings because members of the skeleton army would throw things at them.
